I am writing this piece as a thank you to Assemblywoman Pam Hunter for her tireless efforts in sponsoring the Good Cause eviction bill. This bill is a critical piece of legislation that will help protect tenants from arbitrary and unjust evictions.

As we all know, the housing crisis in our state has reached alarming proportions, with many families struggling to keep a roof over their heads. In many cases, tenants are evicted from their homes without any just cause, leaving them with no recourse.

The Good Cause eviction bill will ensure that tenants are protected from unjust evictions by requiring landlords to provide a valid reason for evicting a tenant. This will go a long way in preventing homelessness and keeping families in their homes.

Assemblywoman Pam Hunter deserves our thanks for her leadership and commitment to protecting the rights of tenants. She's an original sponsor of the bill, and she's been fighting to pass the bill since I was organizing for the Working Families Party in 2019.

I’ve seen this fight grow and take many shapes since her original bill was drafted. We’ve seen councilors rip up 20$ bills in opposition to supporting this legislation. We’ve seen cities like Troy and Albany enact this law on a local level in an effort to protect tenants, only to see courts overrule it on a technicality that has nothing to do with justice. We’ve seen the state act on tenant protections that have definitely improved the quality of life for New Yorkers, and now we need to finish the process by passing Good Cause for our entire state. 

Assemblywoman Hunter has been steadfast in her commitment to Central New Yorkers. Her advocacy for this bill is a testament to her dedication to serving her constituents and making our state a better place to live.
